As a continuation of the HPUX for Linux Admins series. This article explains how to display the HPUX system settings then explain how to edit them. for example, the display HBA configurations like WWN or change server Date, time, and timezone.

You should be able to use the keyboard to navigate the terminal and know the basic commands and their syntax from previous articles.

Gather System Information.
Change System settings.
Check Fiber Card WWN.
Change Date, Time, and Timezone.

We will go through UNIX CLI and show common HPUX commands for monitoring and network control commands

Command	Description
`uname –r`	To view OS Version of your HPUX
`glance`	To find the server’s memory size and other details: (external tool) In the output you will find physical memory size in the output.
`ioscan -C processor`	To list the processor information:
`uname –m`	To display the system architecture:
`model getconf` MACHINE_MODEL	To display machine model:
`swlist HPUXOE`	To display Operating Environment and OS Version. In addition to the latest OS update.
`getconf HW_CPU_SUPP_BITS`	To show Hardware(CPU) bit:
`getconf KERNEL_BITS`	To show Kernel bit:

To get the Server serial number: (Use any of the below):

echo "sc product system;info;wait;il" | cstm | grep -i "system serial"
echo "sel path system\ninfolog\nexit"|cstm|grep "System Serial"
getconf MACHINE_SERIAL 
machinfo | grep "machine serial"

Display HPUX HBA information

Assuming that you have an HBA (Fiber Channel) Card installed on your server. and you need the WWNof this card.

First, Issue the command to show HBA settings.

ioscan -nfC FC

It will show you the device path for the desired FC. for example, /dev/fcd0

Nex, Issue the following command to display the device full configurations including the WWN

fcmsutil /dev/fcd0

Look for a line with the words

N_Port Port WWN which will contain your fiber card identifier.

Modify Settings:

To set the hostname, IP address, date/time, DNS/NIS server details, default gateway after the OS installation:

This command will run automatically after the OS installation.

 set_parms initial

Change HPUX Date, time, Timezone

It is essential to make sure that the server has the correct time, as it could cause many issues. for example, SSL related issues, Server out of sync is it was working in a cluster, or at least

After knowing how to navigate the HPUX terminal In this article, we will explain how HPUX hardware detection works and tools used to manage HPUX devices. For example how to show device details and configure it.

HPUX harware detection

similarly, HPUX uses files located in /dev/ directory to access the hardware and its devices. Most of the devices and their device files are configured automatically during the boot time.

On boot time, HP Unix try to connect all devices and executes /sbin/ioinit.rc script will create new device files if needed.

HPYX Device Management commands

The following HPUX commands will be useful in case that you needed to manage a disk or check the network or device information. For example, To show all the configured devices:

# ioscan -f

list the available disk/CD Drives along with their device file details:

# ioscan -funC disk

To list the tape drives :

# ioscan -funC tape

As before, ioscan command is a powerful tool that allows you to manage various HPUX devices. As another example for it It can list all LAN adapters by defining the following argumant:

# ioscan -funC lan

To show the details of a device file:

# lssf /dev/rmt/0mn

configured the recently connected tape drive:

# insf -C tape

To configure newly connected CD Rom or disk

# insf -C disk

How to HPUX mount CIFs shares

A case where an Oracle DBA has a database instance running on an HPUX machine and needs to mount windows CIFs share to copy some files across the network to the windows shared directory. hence, He has to know how to manage CIFs shares first.

This article explains how to manage CIFS shared directories. for example, you will need to know how to

Mount remote CIFS Shares.
List current CIFS shares mounted.
Temporary unmount CIFS share.
Permanent unmount CIFS share.

We will explain by example how to use HPUX commands like cifsclient, cifsmount, cifslist, and cifsdb which will allow you to manage CIFS shares. however, We strongly recommend reading This article first to make your life easier on HPUX.

If you mounted storage in Linux. then, It will be easy for you to have HPUX mount cifs shares ( Windows shared folders) on your machine is simple. You will go through three steps 1. load CIFs client. 2.Create a folder 3.mount the remote directory to the local path.

cifsclient is a simple application. It takes two parameters start and stop

to start cifsclient just execute the following command.

root@ita1 / # cifsclient start

CIFS Client started; process id: XXXX

root@ita1 / #

secondly, create a directory where you will mount the remote share

root@ita1 / # mkdir -p /mnt/myshare

Lastly, to mount your shared folder you need to know

Server name or IP
your shared folder name on network
your access credentials to the shared folder (username /password)

Simply we use the cifsmount command to mount the remote directory with the following syntax

cifsmount <server name/IP>:/<share-name> /mount/directory -U <username> -P <password>

In our example, The shared directory name is “stage” on remote server IP 192.168.0.220. And the access credential is “stage” for username and the same for the password. We will use the following command

root@ita1 / # cifsmount 192.168.0.220:/stage /mnt/myshare -U stage -P stage

List CIFS shares on hpux

to list current CIFS shares we user the command cifslist it will show a table of all shared CIFS and its status and remote username for each server.

The following explanation for Letters mentioned in State column

M Mounted
R Read-only
L Logged in
S Stored in 0the database

to unmount CIFS share is simple. Just execute the following command

root@ita1 / # cifsumount /mnt/net

This command will temporarily unmount the remote share but whenever cifsclient restarted it will automatically mount it again.

to umount a CIFS share permanently. You have to remove it from CIFS share database. First, use the previously mentioned command “cifslist” to list all CIFS shares. Then use the command cifsdb to remove the targeted share from the database.

root@ita1 / # cifsdb -d /mnt/myshare

this command – with -d parameter – will delete the record from the CIFS database permanently.

HPUX system might appear challenging at first glance, however, after reading this article you will find it more familiar than you think. This article will show how to use keys to navigate into the HPUX terminal and commands similar to what you know in Linux.

“Linux is a UNIX like Operating system”

The trick is to know how to begin and respect ^_^ the differences between both Operating Systems. As for a Linux Administrator who comes from a friendly environment GUI (like KDE or Gnome) with backgrounds, sound, and even some games ^_^ . Not to mention, a CLI -bash- that has auto-complete for commands, file paths even command parameters. Some Linux distributions even have auto-suggestion if you misspelled command

Now, this dude will work in a strange environment in which the arrow keys refuse to do what they normally do :O

After a lot of suffering, You will find that it’s really similar to Linux more than you expect 😀

Navigation Keys in HPUX shell

Working with Shell in HPUX is similar to working in the VI editor. It has two modes Command mode &
Insert mode. We press ESC and [Keys] to switch between modes

Navigation Keys (command mode).

are the old keys ( H , J , K , L )
H=Left
J=Down
K=up
L=right

Key	Functionality
h	Move the cursor to the left one character.
l	Move the cursor to the right one character.
j	Move the cursor down one line.
k	Move the cursor up one line. (Show the last command)
^	Move the cursor to the beginning of the line.
$	Move the cursor to the end of the current line.

Typing and editing commands.

Similarly, as the navigation keys mentioned above. applying the following sequence of keys inside VIM or in HPUX Terminal will facilitate your operation.

Press ESC then press one of the following [Keys] will execute the described functionality.

Key	Functionality
i	Inserts text to the left of the cursor. (enable you to type and execute commands)
a	Begins inserting after the character (append) on which the cursor is positioned.
r	Replace the character under the cursor with the next character you type.
x	Delete character(s) to the right of the cursor, starting with the one beneath it.
X	Delete character(s) to the left of the cursor, starting with the one beneath it.

HPUX commands Similar to Linux.

The following list will show commands similar to Linux. however, you might find it lacking some parameters you use.

File manipulation	ls, rm, cd, mkdir
Text stream and editing	cat, tail, head, vi
Permissions	chown, chmod
Process, memory	Uptime, ps, top, top

Add new disk to Solaris 10

Simply This article explains how to make your Solaris reconize the newly added storage and to be able to mount it.

The Story

For testing purposes I needed a Solaris server. So, created virtual machin to deploy Oracle Database I created one disk for operating system. and another one for database. However, after adding the new hard-disk I expected to be detected automatically like Linux :). But I was disappointed and confused.Of course I tried to use my Linux commands but FAILED and after a lot of net surfing to fix my problem i found a lot of non useful pages but also found many useful sites.

Objectives

Make Solaris recognize the new hard disk.
Create a partition and format it.
mount the partitions (Permanent mount)

Step 1: Make Solaris recognize the new hard disk.

After adding the Hard-disk to the Virtual Machine hardware setting. Then, start the system.

As you will notice Solaris uses its shell which is abit different than you average Linux Shell “bash”. Therefore, we will start the bash to get benefits of auto complete :). You can acheive that

just type bash then hit enter :

#bash
bash-3.2#

After we are in bash , we will start the steps to achieve our target :
list the current detected drives you should find two drives one for Hard disk second for cdrom [c0t0d0s0 , c0t1d0s0]

bash-3.2# ls /dev/rdsk/*s0
/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0

Now we force Solaris to scan for new hardware

bash-3.2# devfsadm

The default operation is to attempt to load every driver in the system and attach to all possible device instances. Next, the command devfsadm creates logical links to existing device nodes in /dev and /devices

now we test if the command did the trick. by executing the first command. it should show three entries

bash-3.2# ls /dev/rdsk/*s0
/dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0

Step 2: Create Partition and format it

Now we can partition the hard disk using the command format it will show intercative prompt. It will give us message asking you to select a number of the device you want to partition

bash-3.2# format
Searching for disks…done
AVAILABLE DISK SELECTIONS:
0. c1t0d0/pci@0,0/pci1000,30@10/sd@0,0
1. c1t1d0/pci@0,0/pci1000,30@10/sd@1,0
Specify disk (enter its number):

Type “1″ or the largest number (which is the last hard disk has been added ) then press “enter”. Depending on the type of disk it may be preformatted:

selecting c1t1d0[disk formatted]

If your drive is not formatted, type format at the format prompt to low level format your hard drive. Next, we need to use fdisk to create the partitions, type “y” to create the default Solaris partition:

format> fdisk
No fdisk table exists.
The default partition for the disk is:a 100% “SOLARIS System” 
partitionType “y” to accept the default partition, 
otherwise type “n” to edit thepartition table.y

Next enter the partition menu, by typing partition:

format> partition

You can print out the current partitioning first if you like:

partition> print
Current partition table (original):
Total disk cylinders available: 1020 + 2 (reserved cylinders)

In this case, I just want to create one large partition for some extra storage so I will allocate all I can to partition 0. Note that partition 2 is used to reference the entire drive and is not a usable partition. To modify a given partition, just enter the number of the partition at the partition prompt:

partition> 0

And now to print the partition table again you can see what has changed:

Save your changes by writing the label to the disk:

Quit out of the partition prompt, and then the format prompt, which takes you back to the command prompt:

partition> quit
format> quit

Format the paritition (Create FileSystem)

Now we are ready to create a file system on this new partition (in this case UFS).

# newfs /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0
newfs: construct a new file system /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0: (y/n)? y
/dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0: 4173824 sectors in 1019 cylinders of 128 tracks, 32 sectors

Make sure that the file system is clean:

# fsck /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0

Step 3:Mount the parition

As in Linux. the mount procedure is very semilar. Linux has fstab and Solaris has vfstab. In addition , you need a directory to mount into. As detailed bellow

First, create the directory as your mount destination

# mkdir /data

Next, add the following line to /etc/vfstab:

/dev/dsk/c1t1d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s0 /data ufs 2 yes -

finally, call the mount command to read the setting from vfstab and mount the partition

# mount /dataCheck the storage size and mount # df -h /data

Filesystem size used avail capacity Mounted on /dev/dsk/c1t1d0s0 1.9G 2.0M 1.9G 1% /data
